Toyota Tests Its New Inline Four-Cylinder Engine
Automotive

Toyota’s experimental GR86 has swapped turbocharging for a lightweight, naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine—offering a rare public glimpse at the technology likely to shape the next generation of Toyota sports cars.

Renowned automobile manufacturer Toyota has tested the “GR86 Future FR Concept” in Japan’s Super Taikyu racing series, featuring a new 2.0-liter engine.

In this experimental model, the previously used turbocharged engine has been replaced by a naturally aspirated, four-cylinder engine.

Codenamed “G20E,” this engine produces approximately 220 horsepower and belongs to Toyota’s new family of compact, lightweight engines.

💡 Key specifications

  • Engine: 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder (G20E)
  • Power: Approximately 220 horsepower
  • Suspension: Double-wishbone setup at both front and rear
  • Key benefit: Reduced front-end weight and no turbo lag

The new engine reduces weight at the front of the vehicle, while the elimination of “turbo lag” is expected to result in a more immediate throttle response. The concept also utilizes a double-wishbone suspension setup at both the front and rear to enhance handling.

Higher RPMs Than Expected

According to Gazoo Racing driver Kazuya Oshima, the engine is capable of operating at higher RPMs than initially anticipated.

Japanese media reports indicate that this experimental vehicle is internally codenamed “Levin.” However, Toyota has yet to make an official announcement regarding the engine for the next-generation GR86.

A Glimpse Into Toyota’s Sports Car Future

Experts suggest that this experimental model offers a significant glimpse into new technologies destined for future Toyota sports cars.
