Macron welcomes UK’s potential return to the European Union
French President Emmanuel Macron has warmly welcomed the indication from British Prime Minister Andy Burnham regarding the UK potentially rejoining the European Union.
Speaking at a press conference in Madrid, Macron said, “Welcome”; if the UK wishes to return—and Prime Minister Andy Burnham is moving in that direction—it would be beneficial for both the UK and European nations.
The French President remarked that the UK’s return to the European Union could prove to be good news for both the bloc and Britain.
A cordial meeting between British Queen Camilla, French President Macron, and his wife also drew significant attention.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also commented on the matter; both leaders were reacting to the British Prime Minister’s speech at the Labour Party conference.
Earlier, Andy Burnham had stated that the UK would lack a clear path forward until a decision regarding long-term relations with the European Union is reached, given that the EU remains Britain’s largest market.
Why it matters: The exchange signals a potential thaw in UK–EU relations and opens the door to renewed discussions about Britain’s long-term trade and political alignment with Europe. With the EU remaining the UK’s largest trading partner, any move toward closer ties could have significant economic and diplomatic implications for both sides.
