Essex Resident Wins Parking Fine Battle with ChatGPT | Tech & Legal News

A resident of Essex, UK, won a legal battle—which had dragged on for nearly three years—over a parking fine, with the help of ChatGPT.

According to international media reports, Rafal Gorfal was issued a £100 fine in August 2023 for failing to pay a parking fee on time. Over the course of the prolonged dispute, the amount grew to approximately £300; however, when the case concluded in September 2026, he was not required to pay anything.

How Did the Parking Fine Happen?

The report states that after parking his vehicle, Rafal Gorfal stood in line at a machine to obtain a parking ticket. When his turn arrived, he discovered that the machine only accepted cash, and card payments were not possible.

He subsequently downloaded the ‘RingGo’ app on his mobile phone to make the payment. However, due to a weak mobile signal and the time required to set up an account, the payment was delayed. As a result, about two weeks later, he received a £100 fine.

Rafal Gorfal challenged the fine, but the matter became increasingly complicated rather than being resolved; by January 2024, the fine amount had risen to £170.

ChatGPT and Court Preparation

According to the report, when Rafal Gorfal was informed that legal proceedings were set to begin against him in October 2026, he decided to seek assistance from ChatGPT.

Rafal Gorfal provided the chatbot with letters, emails, and other documents related to the case, seeking guidance on how to present his position in court.

In a related development, ChatGPT has also been reported to help a firefighter win a case involving £40,000.

Case Withdrawn and Fine Cancelled

The report states that Gorfal used ChatGPT to draft responses to all the notices he received regarding the case. Subsequently, on September 25, 2026, he received an email informing him that the case had been withdrawn and the fine cancelled.

Thus, the dispute was resolved even before the court proceedings, which had been scheduled for October.

Looking Ahead

The case highlights how accessible AI tools are increasingly being used by individuals to navigate complex legal and administrative disputes.

While ChatGPT can help organize information and draft responses, it is not a substitute for professional legal advice. Individuals facing court proceedings should consider consulting a qualified solicitor or legal adviser.
